Don’t be a victim of SMISHING!

Smishing attempts have sky-rocketed in recent years and Americans are increasingly reliant on cell phones and other mobile devices. In addition to sending phony emails (phishing) and phone calls (vishing), identity thieves are now using text messages to gain information and spread malware, viruses and Trojan horses. This scam is called “smishing” because text messages are also known as SMS messages. Here’s more information on how you can protect yourself.

Q.  What is smishing?
A.  Smishing is a scam that uses text messaging for the means of perpetrating identity theft.  The scammer’s text message will ask people to call a toll-free number, or visit a legitimate-looking web-site, then provide personal or bank information.  That information may include some of these pieces of information:  name, date of birth, address, zip code, checking and savings account numbers, credit or debit card number with expiration date and 3-digit security code (CVV2) from the back of the card.

Q.  Why should I be concerned?
A.  The most recent smishing scam has targeted members of several credit unions.  The text message claims that the member’s debit card has been deactivated.  It then instructs the member to call a toll-free number to verify their card information.  When the member calls the toll-free number, they are asked to enter their (a)16-digit card number, (b)PIN (for ATM transactions), (c)expiration date and (d)3-digit security code (CVV2) from the back of the card.  The automated system informs the member that the card has been reactivated.  Once the member has provided the information to the scammer, a duplicate card will be created that can be used anywhere in the world. 

Q.  What happens if I have provided my information to the scammer?
A.  The member’s funds are used for fraudulent transactions.  Accounts are sometimes overdrawn due to these charges.  If a member has responded to any smishing scam we urge them to call United Community Credit Union at (713)-674-5778 immediately.  It is urgent that the credit/debit card be closed and a new one issued.

Q.  How can United Community Credit Union help?
A.  At United Community Credit Union, we want our members to be aware that we will never use text messaging to relate fraudulent activity to our members.  While we do verify member’s information for phone-based inquiries, we will only ask for parts of personal information.  No legitimate financial institution will ever ask for your card’s PIN.  We have an experienced Risk Management team to help resolve any fraudulent activity members may be a victim of; we are here to serve you.
